Japanese String Tree

The wood of the Japanese String Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica, also known as the Pearl String Tree, Honey Tree, or Pagoda Tree) is an absolute rarity in Europe. Since the tree is found here almost exclusively as an ornamental tree in parks or botanical gardens, its wood rarely makes its way onto the market.

When customers stand before a table top made of string tree wood, deeply rooted, fascinating psychological patterns come into play.

In its East Asian homeland, it is revered as the “pagoda tree” or “Chinese scholar tree.” Traditionally, it was planted at the graves of scholars and rulers, as well as at Buddhist temples. Psychologically, this wood conveys a deep spiritual calm, dignity, wisdom, and mental focus—ideal for prestigious conference rooms or executive desks.

Info: one of my most extreme and extraordinary trunks, a unique ancient natural monument. It comes from a university garden and had to be felled for safety reasons as it was split in the middle. I was able to saw off three sections of the trunk. The longest was approx. 215 cm, the others approx. 180 cm. The maximum width is approx. 130 cm. The wood looks similar to oak and elm, but is slightly lighter. In my opinion, it is ideal for use in tables and bar tables. The wood has now also been seasoned for a really long time.
