This is the story of a gigantic ancient copper beech from a park near Stuttgart. The date of planting is documented as 1860. It had extreme fungal infestation and ultimately had to be felled for reasons of danger, as the park is open to the public.
The trunk had a diameter of up to 110 cm and could unfortunately no longer be used due to the advanced fungal infestation. However, I was able to “save” two pieces from the upper part where the trunk forked. One had a diameter of up to 125 cm and the other even up to a little over 140 cm!
I sawed everything into slices and blanks for table tops in June/July 2024. The wood will now be stored for a few years until it can be processed after subsequent kiln drying, which won't be until 2028/2029 at the earliest.
