The Material:

This unique dining table or desk is made from oak planks approximately 24 cm wide, which I cut from oak beams originally designed as railroad ties. It is pure, untreated oak; the beams were never used and have now been seasoned for at least 15 years, which gives these pieces a very special charm and character that you can never achieve with “new” wood normally sawn from tree trunks. The wood also comes from the Nuremberg region—as far as I could determine from the port authority of the Main-Danube Canal. Unfortunately, there is only a limited quantity available, as this was a one-time opportunity. On the outside, I’ve also glued on American walnut—partly to create an elegant contrast and partly to cover the oak edge strips on the underside.

The Craft:

After the required kiln-drying process, this one-of-a-kind table was crafted over many hours of meticulous handwork in my table workshop near Stuttgart. The oak slats were neatly glued together, and classic solid oak reinforcing strips were incorporated on the underside to strengthen the tabletop and prevent it from “warping” naturally. The surface was then meticulously prepared through numerous sanding passes and carefully protected with hard oil—you simply have to feel this table for yourself. It’s suitable both as a dining table and as an elegant desk. The base can be chosen flexibly; a height-adjustable steel base is also an option.
