The Material:
The central component of this one-of-a-kind piece consists of a single, very large oak plank cut from a single log. This oak came from the Stuttgart City Forest; it was felled in the winter of 2013/2014 and then cut on-site by me using my mobile sawmill. Two large slats of solid black locust wood were glued to the sides, which harmonize very well with the oak, as both are ring-porous wood species with similar coloring.
The Craft:
This Monolith oak tabletop has been trimmed and fitted with a wide, solid strip of robinia wood on both sides. Traditional oak edge strips were fitted to the underside. The entire tabletop has been carefully sanded, and all edges have been smoothly rounded like a hand-carved stone, making it simply inviting to touch. All cracks and knots have been filled with black crystal resin to create a seamless surface. The base shown in this photo is a rectangular steel frame in black, but it can be replaced with any other base.
