Hardness: hard to very hard
Characteristics: a very decorative noble hardwood, the heartwood is often indistinguishable from pear wood.
Heartwood formation: yes, the apple is a heartwood tree
Psychological Correspondence: Generally, the apple in symbolism stands for luck. The promised land of the Celts was called Avalon, which means apple land. For the Celts it was one of the 7 sacred trees. The first apple trees were grafted already 3000 years before Christ. The apple is a healing fruit and provides all the nutrients for the day.
Properties/use: hard and dense, very good to work and polish.Sliced wood for woodturners, craftsmen, furniture handles, trim, exclusive single pieces of furniture, planer carcasses, tool handles, screw spindles of presses.
Value/availability: high as only available in small quantities if at all.
Pruning time in arboriculture: in summer (from about May to August), after full leaf shoots.
Sealing behavior: rather poor, if possible cut max.to approx.5 cm diameter
Cutting and wound closure: according to current guideline ZTV Baumpflege, before knot ring up to (as far as possible) max. 5 cm diameter, no wound closure (because ineffective)
